Não contrariamos a tese de que é preferível o médium analfabeto, ingênuo e imaginativo, mas dotado de virtudes cristãs sublimes, ao médium intelectivo, culto e desembaraçado, porém vaidoso, mal intencionado ou interesseiro. Mas é evidente que ainda é melhor o médium humilde, bom e desinteressado, mas estudioso das obras espíritas e dos bons compêndios profanos, que se imuniza contra os automatismos psicológicos, as sugestões alheias e as interferências anímicas.
Atualmente o homem não precisa nascer em berço privilegiado para ser culto, pois as facilidades modernas…, desmentem os que por displicência alegam dificuldade para se educar. Aliás, já nem é preciso enxergar para ler, pois até os cegos já dispõem de vasta biblioteca em “braille”. Alguns médiuns avessos à leitura abandonam-se à fama voluptuosa e cômoda de que são excelentes medianeiros, embora analfabetos. No entanto, o certo é que o fazem mais por preguiça e desinteresse do seu progresso intelectivo e espiritual. Todo ser convocado para contribuir mediunicamente junto à mesa espírita – ou no terreiro de umbanda – deve se reconhecer uma criatura endividada procedendo à colheita dos frutos espinhosos da sementeira imprudente do passado. Sob tal condição, ela assume graves compromissos para com os seus benfeitores desencarnados, assim como é responsável pela própria renovação moral, intelectiva e espiritual.
O primeiro dever do médium analfabeto ou inculto é justamente o de alfabetizar-se e procurar adquirir cultura, lembrando-se de que o sacrifício inicial, para isso, pode ser uma imposição do seu próprio carma muito gravoso. Não se justifica o velho e cômodo sistema, muito de gosto de alguns médiuns displicentes, de justificarem a sua ociosidade mental com a esfarrapada desculpa de possuírem a inata intuição, sensata e certa, de todas as coisas, sem qualquer conhecimento das obras espíritas. Os mais ingênuos ainda acrescentam que o seu vasto conhecimento intuitivo os dispensa atualmente de qualquer novo aprendizado doutrinário, pois é fruto do seu contato com o Espiritismo em vidas anteriores.
Sem dúvida, todos os homens nascem analfabetos, mas todos precisam aprender a ler. Uma vez que as próprias crianças conseguem alfabetizar-se, é evidente que isso ainda será bem mais fácil para os adultos, que já possuem maior desenvolvimento e acuidade mental. Inconscientes do seu ridículo, aqueles que se blasonam de ser iletrados, mas inatamente cultos, lançam torrentes de sandices… e exortações prenhes de lugares comuns à conta de brilhante tese filosófica…
