Iemanjá é um orixá feminino de origem africana cultuada no Brasil. O seu nome tem origem nos termos do idioma iorubá “Yèyé omo ejá”, que significam “Mãe dos filhos peixes”.
No Brasil, Iemanjá recebe diferentes nomes, dentre eles: Dandalunda, Inaé, Ísis, Janaína, Marabô, Mucunã, Princesa de Aiocá, Princesa do Mar, Rainha do Mar, Sereia do Mar, Majestade dos Mares, Senhora dos Oceanos, Sereia Sagrada, dentre outros nomes.
Iemanjá é a rainha das águas salgadas, regente absoluta dos lares, protetora da família. É chamada também de Deusa das Pérolas, é aquela que apara a cabeça dos bebês no momento de nascimento.
É conhecida como “senhora dos mares” e “mãe de todas as cabeças” (iyá ori). Este título tornou-a responsável pelo equilíbrio emocional, psicológico e espiritual do ser humano, provendo o homem da harmonia necessária para ter uma boa existência e convivência no aiê.
Iemanjá representa a água que refresca e dá vida à terra, que ajuda na procriação e na geração de novos seres. Ela é a água que acalma.
No oceano, Iemanjá controla as marés através das fases da Lua e com a força do vento que agita suas águas e faz com que elas se mostrem ora calmas, ora tenebrosas e temerárias.
É a padroeira dos pescadores e é ela quem decide o destino de todos aqueles que entram no mar. Rege as uniões, os aniversários, as festas de casamento, todas as comemorações familiares. É o sentido da união por laços consanguíneos ou não.
Iemanjá, por ser um dos Orixás mais cultuadas nas religiões de descendência africana, é das mais ricas em mitos e mais conhecida.
Existe sincretismo entre Iemanjá e as santas católicas Nossa Senhora dos Navegantes, Nossa Senhora da Conceição e Nossa Senhora da Glória.
Por isso comemora-se o dia de Iemanjá dias 08 de dezembro (Nossa Senhora da Conceição) e 02 de fevereiro (Nossa Senhora das Candeias).
