Ele é uma grande cobra que envolve a terra e o céu e assegura a unidade e a renovação do universo. Passa seis meses como homem e os outros seis meses como cobra.
É simbolizado miticamente pela forma de uma cobra, que é um animal indivisível que, ao unir sua cabeça à cauda, transfigura-se na figura do círculo perfeito, transformando-se então no símbolo da continuidade. É o princípio, unindo-se ao fim.
É a divindade dos opostos porque tem domínio sobre os ciclos da vida. Controla as chuvas e as secas, a noite e o dia, a lua e o sol, o bem e o mal, a vida e a morte, o macho e a fêmea, a saúde e a doença, o material e o imaterial, o céu e a terra etc.
Os filhos deste orixá tem temperamento fácil, tendem à renovação e à mudança. São pessoas pacientes e obstinadas na luta pelos seus objetivos e não medem sacrifícios para alcançá-los. A dualidade do orixá também se manifesta nos seus filhos, principalmente no que se refere às guinadas que dão nas suas vidas, indo de um extremo a outro sem a menor dificuldade.
